Barcoding is the single change that removes the most errors from a lab, because it replaces the step where a human reads a number off a tube and types it somewhere else. Any ordinary USB scanner works — they present as a keyboard, so there is no driver and no configuration beyond the scanner’s own suffix setting.
How it is set up

Plug in any USB barcode scanner. It behaves as a keyboard; no driver is needed.

Set the scanner to send a carriage return after the code, which most do by default.

Scan the tube at result entry and the right order opens.

Questions labs ask
Which scanner should I buy?+
Any USB HID scanner from a mainstream vendor. This is genuinely commodity hardware and an expensive one will not read a lab label better than a cheap one. A 2D imager is worth it only if you also want to read QR codes.
Do I need a wireless scanner?+
Only if the bench layout demands it. Wired is one less battery to manage.
Can it read a barcode printed by another lab?+
It can read the symbol, but the number will not match an order in your system unless you registered it. For referral work, the referral flow is the right route.
